Do I need to unscrew (detach) the 16.4 oz portable propane cylinder after using my portable gas grill?

I have a Weber Q 200 portable propane grill and a 16.4 oz propane tank/cylinder. I have read that the propane cylinder will seal itself when unscrewed from the grill but just wanted to make sure. Do I need to even unscrew it at all after grilling?

Ummm…Don’t take this the wrong way DIY Guy, but you need to respect that propane cylinder a little more!

Those cylinders still contain liquid propane. When you run the appliance, or if there is a leak, you are drawing off vapour. As that happens, the liquid in the cylinder boils to create more vapour. When propane changes state from a liquid to a vapour it expands 277 times! That is how we get such a long amount of burn time out of a small container.

So that small cylinder full of liquid can make a very large amount of vapour!..and if it finds a source of ignition you aren’t going to have a good day!

I’m not trying to be a smart***…I just wanted to point out that those portable cylinders have a lot of potential energy in them and deserve as much respect as any other compressed gas cylinder.

To answer the question…Yes remove the cylinder from the grill between uses and make sure the valve on top of the cylinder seals properly when you remove it.
