Water Heater Installation DIY

I know the story you go down in the basement to get the laundry or grab a tool and all of a sudden you noticed it. A huge pond of water all over your basement floor and it is coming from the bottom of
the water heater. You have been dreading this moment and know there is nothing you can do but
to get it fixed or you will not have any hot water. Even though this repair may cost you a little bit for
the new heater you will be able to save a lot of money if you can do it yourself.

If you are a do it yourself kind of person you will be able to accomplish this task with very little to
no problem at all. Follow along with the methods in this informative article and you will have your
new water heater installed in a couple of hours. Installing a water heater yourself will save you
around 300 or 400 dollars depending on the area you live in. if you aren’t very DIY you’ll be able tostill install your water tank, however it might take just a little longer than two or three hours but if
you like a challenge and are not afraid off doing repairs on your own home it is possible for you to
install the heater yourself as well.

Tools And Materials You Will Need:

1 Water Heater- Install what you are taking out if you’ve got a 40 gallon and wish to improve to a 50gallon now is the time to do it. If you do have a 50 gallon I DO NOT recommends switching to anything lower than what you have.

2.¾ Fittings – You’ll need 2 ¾ couplings and possibly a few elbows. Check what kind of pipe you’ve

got going to your water heater. This can be copper, CPVC, PEX or galvanized. I like to advice getting Shark Bite ¾ fittings because they are uncomplicated to install with PEX, CPVC and copper piping. When you have galvanized pipe you may need to get a conversion fitting and adapt to one of the other pipes for quicker replacement.

3. Black Pipe Fittings – You may need a few ½ black pipe couplings and 90′s to extend or shorten the gas line linking to the heater. Another good tip is to install the gas line last. This way I will be aware of what I need for gas fittings.

4. T&P Valve generally is included with the new heaters.

5. 2 – ¾ dielectrics. At all times replace the dielectrics when replacing a brand new water heater. Be sure to get the correct dielectrics for the piping material you have got in your house.

6.Pliers Preferably Channel locks

7. Torch, Flux, Solder, sand paper

8.  Garden hose.

9. Teflon tape and pipe dope

10.Pipe Wrench or big channel locks

If you have all of the material let’s get ready to start.. The first step is always to turn off the main
water line to the home. After that Turn off the gas vale on the gas line running to the water heater.

Now connect the garden hose into the bottom of the water heater and run the hose to adjacent
floor drain. Turn on the valve and let the heater begin to drain. At this time go throughout the house and turn on all the faucets. Don’t forget to leave the faucets in the on position and you have cold and warm water turned on. It will allow all the water to empty out of the heater significantly faster.

While the water is draining out of the old heater, Unbox the brand new water heater. First pipe dopethe two shafts popping out the top of the heater. Once these are pipe doped screw on the new dielectrics. Next if your heater came with a T&P valve unbox it and pipe dope those threads. The T&P valve will now screw into the side of the water heater. You will see a hole which contains threads and this is where the valve goes. You may need to use your pipe wrench to get that last turn in so the valve points down. The new heater is now prepared and ready to be installed.

Wait for the old heater to stop draining, then proceed to disconnect the gas piping from the old
heater from the union fitting on down. The union is the fitting which is real big in the center and
looks like a hexagon. Once the union is disconnected. Remove the rest of the pipe ONLY to the
heater you’re replacing.

Now we are going to disconnect the water pipes. Next using your channel locks go ahead and
unscrew the old dielectrics. They should disconnect similar to the gas pipe union fittings. Cut off the old dielectrics from the copper or other piping you may have.

Once all the pipes are disconnected from your water heater and it does not seem like there is any
more water inside the tank. Now it’s time we need to move the old heater out of the way so we can
put the new one in place. You will want to make sure you have enough room to maneuver the new
heater into place with the old one out of the way. If you’ve got a tiny area you may have to just
remove the old water heater to generate room for the brand new water heater.

Line up the new water heater with all the pipes that connected the old heater. When you notice
that you need to alter some water piping, leave the pipe using the cold water valve the straight pipe
and reconfigure the hot side.

Connect the water piping to new heater using the shark bite fittings or other fittings you decided
on. You could have to solder the brand new dielectrics to the water piping if you have copper pipe.

When soldering the dielectrics I recommend you determine the amount of pipe that is required from the dielectric to your coupling and cut it to length and solder it on the ground. This can make for an easier solder job. You will also need to take out the washers from your dielectrics so you don’t burn them.

Now the water pipe is all hooked up. You will want to wait for everything to cool, if you were
required to do any soldering. Replace the washers inside the dielectrics and tighten them down.

Let’s make a final check and then turn on the main water line.. While the water heater is filling up
leave the faucets on to help you bleed all of the air from the system.

Now you’ll know what you require for gas pipe. After you got  your gas pipe measurements go
ahead and hook up the gas line just as you took it apart.. If you’re lucky the gas pipe from the old
heater will line up with the new heater. If it does not, just go ahead and reconfigure it as needed.
You can get gas piping in all ranges and sizes.

Once all air is bleed out of the system close up the faucets. Now the water heater is filled up you
need to light it. Most new heaters possess a manual lighting system. This works much like a BBQ
grill does. You push in the pilot button and click the clicker and it will light the pilot light. After about
30 seconds turn the heater on to your desired setting and your water tank will begin to heat the
water. You can expect to now have hot water in about 30 to 45 minutes determined by the size of
the tank.
