Barbecue Grills- Charcoal, Gas, Electric or Pellet?
If you’re looking for a great outdoor/indoor cooking grill, you have a lot of choices. I’d suggest making a few decisions before making your purchase.
You need to decide if you want an electric, gas or charcoal grill. Is this grill to be used outdoors, indoors or both? What’s your budget? Grills are available at a large range of prices. How does the grill fit into any plans you might have for your backyard?
If you decide on an electric grill just know that the technology has really improved the performance of these grills. This is a good option for indoor/outdoor use. If you have an apartment or condo with a small outside area, the electric grills may be your best choice but make sure there is an electrical outlet close as extension cords will lessen the performance of the grill. Electric grills start at around $100 and can run much higher depending on size and options.
Smokers have really gained in popularity over the years. Charcoal is the most common fuel for these smokers but electricity and gas are preferred by many since they have a more consistent temperature and don’t require as much tending to.
Gas grills are growing more and more popular because you can so easily regulate the grill heat and you don’t have to wait for the coals to reach the right temperature before beginning the cooking process. Gas grills come in many different sizes and you choice of size will depend on how much room you have and what your needs are.
Stainless steel grills are fine in bad weather but do take longer to clean than the cast aluminum grills. The most common gas grills sell for between $100-300 but can cost much more than that for the top of the line models.
Charcoal is the traditional choice for an outdoors grill. Many people feel like these grills produce a better tasting meat but some feel that the starter fluid gives it a gas taste. Good charcoal grills are the least expensive choice but again if you want deluxe you will pay a higher price.
Pellet grills are becoming more popular with those who feel like the smoke really gives the food a special flavor. These grills burn very clean and are definitely efficient in their energy usage.
You can also find pellet grills that can be switched to gas for cooking at very high temperatures. These grill can be very pricy and often start at around $500.
I prefer the electric grills for their variety of uses. I’ve enjoyed all of the grills mentioned here but for my needs, I really appreciate the indoors/outdoors option of electric grills.
